Donside school raises eco-flag

Jubilant pupils at a Donside primary school are hoisting a new green flag- an eco-flag.

Midmar School has been awarded the distinction of the flag, which signifies the school’s commitment to the environment.

Extra celebrations will be taking place in Midmar however as this is the third time they’ve been awarded the coveted flag.

The flags are given every two years by Aberdeenshire Council to schools who can meet a number of criteria in their teaching of how to look after the environment.

Of the 172 ‘shire schools signed up to the eco-schools project there are currently 122 schools that have achieved the bronze award, 110 schools have silver awards and 56 have the gold-plated Green Flag award.

Midmar achieved it’s hattrick of flags by winning the award in 2008, 2010 and now 2012.

Head teacher of the school Elizabeth Shepherd said: “The flags need to be renewed every two years by studying certain environmental subjects and showing the pupils can take them onboard, focus topics have been Food and the Environment and School Grounds this time.”

Ms Shepherd says she hopes the lessons will carry over to adulthood: “Hopefully when they become adults they will understand a lot more about sustainability and the environment. For example, we did a project on food miles just by looking at the sheep in a near-by field, the children now understand why it is better for the environment that mutton bought in the shop comes from Scotland than New Zealand!”
