The Drumoak SPCA centre has launched an appeal to find homes for three new horses in it’s care following the charity’s largest ever case of illegal animal transport.

The animals were rescued along with another five horses and three donkeys who are now being cared for in Balerno, Edinburgh and private stables.

Following the investigation, Laurence McAllister of Country Antrim was found guilty of illegally transporting horses into Scotland and causing the animals unnecessary suffering.

McAllister was banned from transporting horses for three years and fined £13,500.

All of the animals found were signed over into the Scottish SPCA’s care, where they have been recovering from their year long ordeal.

Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said: “These horses and donkeys have spent over a year being rehabilitated by our dedicated staff. Some required veterinary treatment for injuries and illnesses, however, these animals did not just need our help to recover physically. Many were also affected mentally and it has taken a great deal of time to bring them round to the point where they are ready to be rehomed.

Emily Drummond is the horse carer at the Drumoak centre: “Thankfully none of the horses we received were too badly hurt but the horses in the Edinburgh centre were in trouble.”

Emily told the Piper: “If a horse is underweight then it can take up to six months just to get them back up to weight before they can be rehomed, thankfully that hasn’t been the case this time.”
