Police board need custody visitors

Volunteers are urgently required to visit custody cells across the North-east.

The Grampian Independent Custody Visiting Scheme was launched in June last year and the purpose of the scheme is to make independent and unannounced visits to Grampian Police custody facilities to check on the welfare and condition of people held in police custody. The scheme relies on volunteers to carry out visits. During these visits any problems or areas of concern identified by volunteers are recorded and brought to the attention of custody staff for resolution.

Westhill and District councillor and member of Grampian Joint Police Board, Iris Walker said the volunteer roles are vital for the community.

She said: “Custody visitors are entirely independent of the Police and their role helps ensure detainees are being treated fairly. Visitors simply look, listen and report back what they find.”
