Sir

I found the headline on page 9 of last week's ( January 29) Piper - Snow's a boost for landscaping firm - quite incredulous.

The centre of Banchory footways, were left covered with snow and ice for three weeks over the festive season making walking conditions treacherous underfoot, yet your report informs the residents and visitors of/to Banchory, that Aberdeenshire Coun
cil were unable to cope and actually employed a contractor – at what cost? - to assist.

The result was that shoppers at the busiest time of the year had to take their life in their hands in dangerous conditions.

Nobody denies staff may have worked hard and long, but who made the big decisions as to what was done and what was not?. According to the Council's website, Priority 1 Footways like Banchory High Street, should be cleared first. This did not happen...why?

To my knowledge, Aberdeenshire Council have a legal and moral obligation to ensure that footways should be made safe for pedestrians. Sadly, on this occasion they failed miserably.

On Monday ( February 1) , after an overnight snowfall of 8cm the High Street footway (north side) was only partially free from snow, yet the footway leading to the local doctor's surgery, is completely clear. Why the discrepancies?

Yours etc
George Campbell.
