SIR

I refer to your article regarding the continuing misleading road signs on the B974 (Piper, January 8).

We left Banchory early on Christmas eve morning from Banchory to travel to Fife. The appropriate sign at Feugh bridge was closed thereby indicating that the road over the Cairn O' Mount was open.

On reaching the Finzean junction the sign was op
en informing motorists that the road was closed. Consequently we had to retrace our journey and head towards Stonehaven to continue our journey south.

It was my belief that the B974 was in fact clear, but once again (this has happened to me previously) lack of communication to inform motorists accurately was evident.

On my journey back from Fife on the December 29, I noticed that the sign at the Finzean junction was still indicating that the B974 was closed, whereas I had just travelled over the Cairn O' Mount. How can this happen?

Thankfully the Piper has highlighted the problem and hopefully the appropriate authorities will take note and act accordingly. Then, and only then, will unnecessary journeys be avoided and frustrations tempered.

To conclude and on a seperate matter, I am appalled by the lack of activity from Aberdeenshire Council to allow snow and ice to lie on Banchory High Street footpaths for a three week period to the detriment of the residents. Other footpaths fared no better.

Yours etc
George Campbell
