SIR

I would like to find out about the quarries on the south side of the Hill of Fare, especially Craigton and Raemoir.

I have been able to find the dates between which they operated and details of those who lived nearby who worked in the quarries before 1900. I have also found that the main street of Banchory was built from granite from these quarries and that granite from one of the quarries was used as the plinth of a statue of Queen Victoria in Windsor.

I have not been able to find out how the granite was quarried, how the quarries operated on a day-to-day basis and the customers of the quarry.

If any reader knows anything about the quarries or has photographs or memorabilia or knows somebody who knows, will he or she please contact me.

Yours etc

David Coleman,
