Come rain or shine, Aboyne’s pitch will be fine

Sports enthusiasts flocked to Aboyne on Saturday (November 23) to see the opening of the village’s first all-weather pitch.

Delivered through a partnership of Aberdeenshire Council, Mid Deeside Limited and Aboyne Community Development Group, the new pitch can accommodate a wide range of activities, such as hockey, multi-sports, football, and athletics, and is available for community and school use throughout the year.

Opening the facility Vice-chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure (ELL) committee, Councillor Ron McKail said: “All in all. this all-weather pitch is an excellent example of everyone pulling together to create something special for the community and local schools and I pay tribute to all involved.

He added jokingly: “I understand the new pitch has replaced the old ‘blues’ pitch that used to serve the school until recently. I know that Sportscotland no longer support the use of such pitches – a viewpoint those of us who have played on them would readily endorse. Some of us still have flint in their knees from playing on such surfaces!”

Also present was Aboyne, Upper Deeside and Donside Councillor Geva Balckett who said: “This is a fantastic community facility that I hope will be utilised by everyone from Braemar to Torphins.”

Two and a half days of free sporting events followed the opening.
