A leading researcher in the use of computer-generated images to help visualise building design will deliver a free professorial lecture at Robert Gordon University (RGU) on Thursday, November 22.
Professor Richard Laing from RGU’s Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment will explore how a variety of visualisation technologies and approaches can be used in architecture, construction, surveying and design.
During the lecture, he will present a range of approaches to the technology and describe how they can be used together to produce visualisations suitable for application within the research of multiple disciplines and to inform practice in industry.
Professor Laing has led a number of research commissions for the European Social Fund, the Economic and Social Research Council and the Department of Health, providing techniques for assessing human responses to virtual built environments.
His research has made significant and innovative use of 3D virtual models to present design and environmental scenarios, also highlighting the benefits of computer technology in building conservation and innovative housing.
Professor Laing said: “Advances in visualisation technology since the 1970s have led to a multitude of techniques designed to assist in the visual communication of architecture and buildings. Some of these aim to produce images which approach photo-realism, whilst others attempt to communicate specific aspects of the design process, such as the materials, energy use or construction requirements.
“My work not only appeals to professionals working in architectural design and construction but to those with an interest in how visualisation can be used to improve communication in design and help generate innovative ideas.”
‘Approaching Reality: Visualisation in architecture and construction’ takes place at RGU’s Faculty of Health and Social Care, Garthdee Road on Thursday 22 November at 6pm, and will be followed by light refreshments.
