The 2015 Aboyne Cello Festival is set to become the largest of it’s kind in Scotland with 30 performers taking part later this month.

Beginning with a handful of cellists 10 years ago, the Festival has now added cellists from across the UK to triple in size.

The Festival has at its heart three cellists with an international reputation as teachers and soloists - James Halsey -the director, Alice Neary and Philip Higham.

The tutors also give lessons during the week which students can sit in on.

The Cello Festival begins with a solo recital by Alice Neary in Woodend Barn Banchory on 19th July.

The following day, Julia Wagner, winner of the 2015 Young Artist Award, will give a recital in Birse and Feughside Church, Finzean. On 22nd July the “Three Cellists” will entertain, amaze and amuse in Aboyne Community Theatre with virtuoso arrangements of works by Beethoven, Hummel, Enesco and others.

On Saturday 25th July, as part of the Aboyne and Deeside Festival, James Halsey, Alice Neary and members of the Bingham String Quartet will combine their talents to perform music by Maconchy, Arensky and Schumann.

Conceived in 2005 by Aboyne resident and cellist Myrtle Wat The Aboyne Cello Festival has rapidly established itself as one of the largest and most exciting events in the cellists’ calendar.
