A GROUP of friends from Ballater have completed a sponsored bike run - raising £5,000 for the British Heart Foundation along the way.

The Piper reported back in May how Ballater father-of-two, Ian Halliday, was taking part in the bike run, after suffering a heart attack at the age of just 44.

Organiser Katrina Farquhar, of HM Sheridan Butchers in Ballater, said: "We have now successfully completed the run and everyone enjoyed it! The day itself was glorious sunshine, so that was great."

She thanked Margaret and Ronald Finnie for providing food at Corndavon Lodge, the Balmoral Bar for food upon their arrival back in Ballater, and Cycle Highlands for lending them three bikes and taking all 10 bikes up to the start at Tomintoul.

The team of nine cyclists pedalled 30 miles from Tomintoul through the hills to Inchrory, Loch Builig and Gairnside, finishing in Ballater.

Ian, a keen mountain biker who also runs Ballater Judo Club, revealed in the Piper how the January attack came totally out of the blue, and he had never had any heart or chest problems previously. Following keyhole surgery, Ian, of Richmond Place, returned home but must take medication for the rest of his life.

"I wanted to give something back for the excellent care I received from paramedics, doctors and nurses and rehabilitation staff and just raise as much as possible for the BHF," he said.
