FOUR golfers raised over £2,000 for a cancer charity by playing four rounds in a day at Alford Golf Club.

Albert Forbes, Craig Thomson, Richard Marr and Albert's son Alexander set themselves the gruelling challenge of completing 72 holes of the Alford course in a day to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research.

Albert, a warehouse supervisor at Odjfell Drilling, said: "Our family has been deeply affected by cancer. I have lost an uncle and an aunt to cancer and my mother is currently receiving chemotherapy for cancer. We have been involved with Macmillan cancer nurses for a number of years and we have been very dependent on the fantastic help they provide."

The 56-year-old from Aberdeen who spent much of his childhood living in the Alford area said he was delighted to raise money for the cancer charity.

"We raised £2,105 and we are really chuffed with that total," he said "It was a super day. The weather was very nice and we all played pretty much to our handicaps.

"We started at ten past five in the morning and we finished at 20 past eight in the evening. The last nine holes were a bit of a slog because we were getting tired but overall it was a really worthwhile event."

Albert added: "I can't speak highly enough about the great work that the Macmillan nurses do. The support they provide the patients, along with the families of the individual affected by cancer, makes a huge difference.

"I did a similar fundraiser at the Kings Links three years ago and it is a really worthwhile cause to raise money for."

The four golfers, who have handicaps ranging from 12 – 19, kept a stableford points score of the best two scores from the four players for each hole when they completed the challenge last Friday (June 27). After 72 holes they finished with a combined stableford points score of 362.
