THE former cook at Tarland School received a big surprise when she visited her former colleagues recently.

Tosh Mitchell (Pat), of 6 Strachan Cottages, had retired in December after 30 years working at the school.

She said: "I was asked in to the school for a cup of tea with the catering folks only to discover that the staff from all round about were there. They presented me with flowers, a hand made cake and gifts. It was totally unexpected."

More surprises were to come. She was told to go through to the hall, where she found the children singing a song for her. She explained: "They had made up a song for me!

"I got flowers, a voucher for Sinclairs which I've since bought jewellery with, as well as a lovely card which they'd made and signed."

Known to everyone as Tosh, she started as a cleaner at the school in 1979 and went on to work in the kitchen in 1983 before finally deciding to hang up her apron in December.

She said: "I really miss the kids and finding out what's happening in the village."

Husband, Bill, also retired from the council in June 2009. The couple hope to use their retirement to spend time away in their caravan.
