Young musicians maintain high standards

COMPETITORS from as far as Orkney and Strathclyde took part in the annual festival of Scottish music under the auspices of Banchory Strathspey & Reel Society in Banchory.
Fiddle competitions, adjudicated by Douglas Lawrence of Glasgow were held in the Burnett Arms and the town hall, with accordion, adjudicated by Wayne Robertson, Dundee and piano adjudicated by Graeme Mitchell, Huntly.

Adjudicators, as well as spectators, agreed that the standard of playing was of the usual high quality throughout all the classes and age groups, especially in the younger age groups.

The results were: Violin 9 years and under, 1st Emily Rentoul, Tarves; 2nd Lisa Walker, Tarves; 3rd Alison Rothnie, Orkney; 4th Mollie Burr, Tarves.

Violin 10 to 12 inclusive, 1st Sarah Alexander, Buckie; 2nd Hannah Renton, Aberdeen; 3rd Kirsten Forsyth, Westhill; 4th Alasdair McCrone, Banchory.

Violin 13 to 15: March, Strathspey & Reel, 1st Kerry Alexander, Buckie; 2 Neil Davidson, Banchory; 3rd Helen Stirling, Drumoak; Slow air, 1st Kerry Alexander, Buckie; 2nd Neil Davidson, Banchory; 3rd Rowan Allam Ballater; Violin Senior: March, Strathspey & Reel, 1st Fiona Henderson, Kirriemuir; 2nd Lisa Mitchell, Huntly;
3rd, Emma Alexander, Buckie.

Slow air, 1st Jack Smedley, Cullen; 2nd Barbara Anderson, Huntly; 3rd Emma Alexander, Buckie.

Slow Strathspey 1st, Jack Smedley, Cullen; 2nd Ann Nicol, Insch; 3rd Barbara Anderson, Huntly.

Championship (for past winners of senior fiddle competitions) 1st Ann Nicol, Insch, 2nd Shona MacFadyen West Kilbride, 3rd=Heather Anderson, Tarland, 3rd= David Anderson, Tarland.

Accordion 12 and under 1st Gregor Allan, Tarves; 2nd Callum Cruickshank, Lumphanan; 3rd Isla Wallace, Orkney.

Accordion 13 to 15 inclusive 1st Roddy Wishart, Stromness; 2nd Cameron Michael Linklater, Stromness; 3rd Neil Mitchell, Huntly.

Accordion Senior 1st Neil Angus McNeil, Aberdeen; 2nd Nick Cowling, Bridge of Don.

Piano 12 & Under 1st Callum Cruickshank, Lumphanan; 2nd, Yasmin Sara Nicolson, Inverurie; 3rd Aidan Wishart, Stromness.

Piano 13 to 15 inclusive 1st Roddy Wishart, Stromness; 2nd Marsaili Calder, Huntly.

Piano Senior 1st Nick Cowling, Bridge of Don.

Composers - for a Strathspey 1st Nick Cowling, Bridge of Don; 2nd Robert McCombie, Dinnet; 3rd Tom Hall, Banchory.

The highest marks in the festival went to Neil Angus MacNeil in the senior accordion. The prize for best Scott Skinner strathspey by a junior competitor went to Kerry Alexander of Buckie, and to Ronald Jappy, Findochtey in the senior competition.

Neil Davidson of Banchory won the highest marks by a local competitor in the junior competitions.
