A Ballater restaurant has cooked up a storm of success as it was named runner up in the nationwide Asian Food Awards 2014.

India on the Green, a staple spice stop in the centre of Ballater, has seen success in previous culinary competitions, namely the Aberdeenshire Curry Awards.

Chef Raj, who owns India on the Green restaurant and takeaway was selected as a finalist in the Asian Food Awards this year.

The Indian eatery was also named Newcomer of the Year in the North East region.

Raj explained what it was like to compete with top chefs from across Scotland.

He said: “There was definitely a lot of heat in the competition.

‘‘I had never competed on a national platform like this before and there was a lot of work put in and to be one of the finalists was a wonderful thing.”

The restaurant, which is a recent addition to the Ballater scene, has already proven popular with locals, with some diners travelling from Aberdeen specially to sample its dishes.

Raj said: “India on the Green has only been open for a year and a half.

‘‘To win the award of Newcomer of the Year is a great achievement for us.

‘‘This award is down to the staff, management, chef and, most importantly, the customers who have supported us since we opened.”

Raj also runs an Indian takeaway in Stonehaven, Nu Spice, which was also runner up in the Asian Food Awards.

Nu Spice won Takeaway of the Year in the North-east.

He added: “Nu Spice won in the Aberdeenshire Curry awards last year so to get the award was simply amazing.

‘‘For here it has been achievement, achievement, achievement.”
