‘Boost’ for producers welcomed

Dennis Robertson, SNP MSP and member of the Scottish Parliament’s rural affairs committee, says the announcement by the Scottish Government of a £100,000 boost to support the continuing fight of dairy farmers to achieve a fairer price for the milk that they produce is an important step forward.

The MSP for Aberdeenshire West, who was s at a Tesco initiative, the Enjoy the Taste of Scotland road show, said: “The price that Scottish farmers are paid for every pint of milk which they produce is below the cost of production, I am delighted that the SNP Government has responded with a £100,000 boost to support dairy farmers in their fight for a fair price for milk.

“Local food producers in the north-east need all our support, the Tesco Enjoy the Taste of Scotland road show is helping reminding consumers that the choice is ours to make, however more must be done as shelves must be filled with local produce. I was disappointed to learn that Tesco have still very little Scottish fresh lamb on their shelves a week after I wrote to the Chief Executive of Tesco, Philip Clarke.

“The fact that the SNP Government has committed funds to assist dairy farmers in creating local producer organisations is an important step forward and the plans to consult on legislation in the autumn are being welcomed by dairy farmers.

“It is in absolutely everyone’s interest if farming is to have a sustainable future, particularly for our local food producers and for rural communities in the north-east.”
