A new store opened in Ballater on Saturday, creating 11 jobs.

Long-estbalished fashion firm Wilkies began trading from the former McEwens site in the village’s Station Square.

Despite the rain, a long queue formed in the run-up to opening time.

Wilkies is offering everything from top-quality ladies and men’s fashion and footwear to homeware and linens - establishing a one-stop shop for all fashion and home essentials.

Managing director Karen Forret said: “It was a pleasure to see so many local people coming to support the opening, “Everyone seemed really delighted with what they found saying that it was a delight to have everything we were offering on their doorstep.”

Local Councillor Katrina Farquhar, who performed the opening ceremony, said: “Karen has done a great job in such a short time by getting stock, staff and opening.

“Ballater residents and visitors are delighted with the shop being re-opened so quickly and are sure it will be a great asset to the village.”
