A Culter man is preparing to brr-ave the elements as lead dipper at the Stonehaven charity splash for the sixth year running.

Michael Hopkins has made the splash on New Year’s Day wearing various costumes from Batman to Baywatch and Saltireman, accompanied by fellow lead dipper and sidekick, Adam Bennett.

Michael said: “We have been best friends since 1994 and went to the same primary and secondary school in Stonehaven.

“Over the last few years we’ve been pairing up for the Dip.”

The Dip and Nip event is popular across the North-east and raises funding for leading children and young people’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent.

Michael said: “We both retired this year after the 2014 Dip because Adam moved to the USA with his wife and two kids.

‘‘They came over to visit last month and Holly from CLIC Sargent asked if we would come out if retirement and help her run the Dip.

“For me, I said yes because I am based here and my boss at my new job is impressed with what I do outwith work, but Adam had to head back to the States.”

The Stonehaven New Year’s Day Dip will take place from noon.

All participants will be given a free CLIC Sargent T-shirt, a hot cup of soup donated by Cool Gourmet, a nip of whisky to warm up the over 18s, donated by Dunnottar Wine and Spirits, and sweets donated by Aunty Betty’s.

Fancy dress is optional but encouraged, with a special prize for the best costume!

Registration for the event is free and participants are being asked to raise a minimum of £100 sponsorship to take part.

Holly Taylor, fundraising manager (North East Scotland and Shetland) at CLIC Sargent, said: “I’m sure there are lots of people who will join in the fun and help us raise much-needed funds to make a difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer in the North East of Scotland.

“Whether you’ll be braving the dip yourself, or coming to support a ‘dip and nipper’ we would love to see you there!”
