A Deeside ghillie is planning a marathon summer bike ride to raise money for two local charities.

Robert Harper, 56, from Durris, is planning to cover a 1000-mile route from Land’s End to John O’ Groats, covering 80-100 miles a day, in June.

I was often asked would I do a sponsor bike ride again

He is raising money for the Archie Foundation and CALICO (Cancer and Leukaemia in Children Orientated).

Robert, who was a ghillie on the River Dee for 40 years, is hoping to give the organisations a boost to the tune of £5000.

He said: “The route starts at Lands End-Liskeard, goes up the West Coast along the North Coast to Thurso and on to John O’Groats.

“The total distance is nearly 1000 miles, and I’ll be averaging between 80 and 100 miles a day.

“When I did a charity bike ride in 2009 in aid of the Nazareth Hospital in Israel, I was often asked would I do a sponsor bike ride again.

“I’m delighted now to be doing one for local charities.”

The bike ride will take place from June 14-26.

Robert, a ghillie at Lower Crathes on Dunecht Estates, has already set up a Justgiving site for the Archie Foundation and will shortly have sponsor sheets for both charities.

He said: “My target is £5000. I’m really encouraged that it’s off to such a good start.”
