Aberdeen Wanderers 23

Deeside 17

Deeside’s lead at the top of BT Caledonia League Division 2 North was cut to just two points on Saturday after the Banchory side suffered a narrow defeat to Aberdeen Wanderers.

The result was particularly disappointing after such a strong start from the visitors, going 12-0 up in the first half with two tries and a conversion including a score from Eddie Blyth.

Wanderers got a try and a penalty on the board to bring before Deeside scored again through Bailey Paterson to make the score 8-17.

The home side clawed their way back though, and secured the win.

The final score of 23-17 earned Deeside a losing bonus point while second place Garioch could only manage a 10-5 win over bottom place Ellon, a game where they would surely have expected to take a try scoring bonus point.

The two results combined prevented the Inverurie side from going level on points with Deeside however they have now closed the gap to just two points.

Wanderers win has also propelled them into the title race however they would need several results to go their way in order to finish top.

With just three games remaining, the title is still Deeside’s to lose but another slip up could allow Garioch to overtake.

Deeside are next in action in three weekends time when they travel to Ellon.
