Alford singer Emeli Sande has gone straight to number one in the UK singles chart and told the Piper that she was “absolutely ecstatic” with the news.
The song, Read All About It, which is a collaboration with rapper Professor Green was named number one when the official countdown was revealed on Sunday.
The former Alford Academy pupil also took the top spot in the iTunes singles chart the previous week after an electrifying performance on the X Factor.
The song has sold more than 100,000 copies, making it the second fastest seller of the year after One Direction’s debut single, What Makes You Beautiful.
The 24-year-old also picked up the best breakthrough artist accolade at the Scottish Style Awards in Glasgow on Saturday.
Emeli’s next single Daddy, which features the band Naughty Boy, is due to be released on November 27. The video was filmed in Las Vegas.
She was due back in Glasgow this week to be presented with an award by Glasgow University and to play at Oran Mor in the city as part of her tour before heading to Edinburgh.
Emeli told the Piper: “I’m absolutely ecstatic to be part of a number one record, especially as it’s on my friend Professor Green’s single.
“He’s a great friend and brilliant to work with and I’m overjoyed for him.
“It’s been an amazing experience, getting to perform with him on some massive shows like X Factor and being part of the whole thing at this level.
“I want to say a huge thanks to everyone that’s supporting me, especially at home in Aberdeenshire and Scotland and I’m really excited about the next few months.”
Emeli, who has written songs for the likes of Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole and Susan Boyle, will release her debut album Our Version of Events in February next year.
