Muir of Dinnet nature reserve has a number of free, fun family events planned this summer.
The centrepiece is the Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) nature reserve’s fun day on July 8, with plenty of games and crafts on offer.
The day includes activities such as make-a-snake (painting snake-shaped sticks) hapi-zome (natural leaf and flower printing involving a rubber mallet), bird boxes, face painting and a treasure hunt, among other treats. Tea and home bakes will also be available as a fundraiser for Guide Dogs. The fun day takes place from noon to 4pm.
Other activities include Moths in the Morning, from 10am to noon on July 3. Participants will discover the marvellous moths caught in live traps set up overnight, and will also search for day-flying moths and butterflies. This is a SNH and Butterfly Conservation event, and booking is essential.
The third event, Edibles and Medicinals, takes place from 1pm to 3pm on July 21. Everyopne is welcome to go along and learn how people fed and healed themselves with the plants around them, long before supermarkets and pharmacies made it so easy. Participants will get a chance to find out which plants they used and try some wild foods.
Catriona Reid, Muir of Dinnet reserve manager, said: “Our annual fun day is a wonderful family drop-in event, with lots of games and crafts – plus the chance to see the reserve and find out more about all the wildlife that depend on it. “The other two events are also great chances to find out more about the amazing plants and insects on the reserve.”
Call Catriona on on (013398) 81667 to book either the moth or edible/medicinal event. There is no need to book for the fun day. All U18s must be accompanied by an adult. All events meet at the Burn o’ Vat Visitor Centre on the reserve.
