A Banchory family successfully completed an epic cycle ride this month in aid of three very worthy causes.

The Leftwich family took part in this year’s “Deloitte Ride Across Britain” event, and have so far raised a total of £3000 for the British Paralympic Association, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Chest, Heart and Stroke (Scotland).

Father Ian Leftwich said: “Raising money for the British Paralympic Association was through my employer, BP Exploration, which is partnered with that charity. The other two were for more personal connections.

“I’ve got a younger sister who was recently diagnosed with MS, so I wanted to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and my wife works with people who have had heart problems and are recovering from strokes, so she thought it only fitting to raise money for that charity.”

Ian and his son, Ben, cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats in just nine days, and Ian’s wife, Sue, cycled the length of Scotland in just four days, joining her husband and son at Penrith.

They averaged distances of 110 miles per day, with paralympic athletes, including Jody Cundy, joining the cyclists for some of the stages.

Ian said: “Seeing first-hand how these people overcome their disadvantages was really quite inspiring.”
