RETIRED fishing ghillie Jimmy Hepburn, 83, has won the annual competition for the best window box at Sluie Mohr Sheltered Housing Complex in Ballater.

Tenants are given a window box and compost to get going, but the choice and care of flowers is left up to themselves.

Jim’s mixed bloom entry beat five others to take the £10 prize. He said he was thrilled with the win, and would be buying ice creams for everybody in the time-honoured tradition of the contest.

Jimmy first won the contest two years ago, and was surprised to win again so soon as competition is fierce among tenants.

Judge Kathleen McCulloch said it had been difficult to pick a winner from so many lovely displays, but she had chosen Jimmy’s one as she could tell it had been very well looked after.

Sheltered housing officer Mary Fyvie said: “Six tenants took part in our competition this year and, despite the lack of sun, the window boxes were like a ray of sunshine brightening up the complex.”
