Aberdeenshire achieves Fairtrade Zone status

Aberdeenshire has succeeded in achieving Fairtrade Zone status after the application was approved by the Fairtrade Foundation.
The organisation award Fairtrade Zone status to an area that has made a commitment to support and use products with the Fairtrade mark.
Buying Fairtrade allows consumers to choose products that meet international standards with the knowledge that producers are getting a fair price.
Provost of Aberdeenshire, Councillor Jill Webster said: “I’m proud that Aberdeenshire has been recognised as a Fairtrade Zone. This reflects the commitment demonstrated by businesses and consumers in the area to ensuring that farmers and workers in developing countries get a better deal for their products.
“By purchasing a product with the Fairtrade logo, you are also contributing towards social and environmental projects which make a real difference to communities.
“I would urge everyone to participate in the forthcoming Fairtrade Fortnight, which begins on February 25, and consider making the switch to Fairtrade products.”
Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee Councillor Peter Argyle said: “I’m delighted that Aberdeenshire has been recognised for playing its part in ensuring that farmers and workers benefit from the security of knowing that they will receive a fair price for their products.
“This Aberdeenshire-wide award builds on the achievements of individual towns and areas within Aberdeenshire which have previously been awarded Fairtrade status.
Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Sustainability Sub-Committee, Councillor Isobel Davidson said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Aberdeenshire and we are deeply appreciative of local businesses, retailers, community groups and our Fairtrade Schools whose work underpins this success.
“Support for Fairtrade across communities in Aberdeenshire continues to grow, with new groups being established and further applications for Fairtrade status being submitted within the last two months.”
Fairtrade Fortnight will be held from Monday, February 25 until Sunday, March 10.
