A Deeside School pipe band are hoping they can bag the top spot after entering next years Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships.

The band from Aboyne Academy has entered the 2014 Edinburgh competition which has categories for every level – including fledgling outfits that may not have previously competed or even played in public.

After the success of the inaugural competition earlier this year, Pipe Band leader at Aboyne Academy, Rebecca Morrison, said: “Performing indoors for the first time allowed our pupils an insight into the different atmosphere this can create. It was greatly encouraging to see the passion the younger generation has for piping at last year’s event and the excitement it created has helped further inspire our players.

“Rehearsals for the 2014 championships are already under way, with our band eager to improve on their performance last year. It is fantastic to see them working together to showcase the fantastic musical talent they possess.”

Last year saw 40 schools enter the first ever competition, which was hailed in the piping community as a great success.

64 schools have already registered for 2014, but organisers are keen for more schools to sign up by the January 24 deadline.

The competition takes place on March 9 and will be held between Broughton High School in Edinburgh and neighbouring Fettes College.
