Concerns raised over Finzean school report

Parents of children at Finzean school have heard that there is “considerable scope” for improvements in a new report from Education Scotland.

Inspector Sadie Cushley wrote to the pupil’s parents and carers at the school and Ballogie nursery after her visit.

In the letter she singled out the nursery for praise but said of the school: “Children in the nursery class learn and achieve well. At the primary stages, there is considerable scope to improve how well children learn and achieve.

“We have asked the school to make urgent improvements to the curriculum... The acting headteacher needs to now provide stronger leadership and work closely with Aberdeenshire Council to take forward the improvements required.”

She rated the school ‘weak’ for ‘Improvements in performance’, ‘Learners’ experiences’ and ‘meeting learning needs’. The report rated the nursery ‘good’ on these factors.

North- east MSP Alison McInnes has now written to Aberdeenshire Council asking for answers.

She said: “I was greatly concerned to read these comments and have asked the local authority’s chief executive Colin Mackenzie what steps are being taken...”

When we put the issue to our Facebook friends some said they had “voted with their feet”.

Diane Brown said: “When my oldest started this school he was well in front of the class. After four years of being in Finzean he had quickly fallen behind!! We moved from the area and his new school commented on how behind both boys were... If we hadn’t moved I would have taken my kids out of Finzean”

An Aberdeenshire Council spokeswoman said: “A recent report for Finzean School highlighted areas within the primary school where development is required. We have put an action plan in place to support improvement within the primary to ensure the children’s skills can develop and make appropriate progress.

“The nursery staff and pupils have continued to make very positive progress and received positive feedback in all areas during this visit.”
