Construction work on the long-awaited new Drumoak Primary School is all set to finally get under way early this month.
The replacement site has been in the pipeline for some time and will accommodate 145 pupils with space for 30 children in the pre-school nursery.
Drumoak’s new site will include six classrooms as well as great new sports facilities. Pupils can look forward to a double badminton court sports hall complete with showers and changing accommodation.
A new library and fully-equipped kitchen for the preparation and cooking of of school meals are also included in the design.
Admin, support, and management staff will benefit from an adjacent office building.
The plans include a controlled ‘break-out space’ for supervised group activity and a landscaped hard external space for outdoor activities.
The new external play space will include an all-weather sports pitch and is set to lie between the school and the south boundary of the site.
Drumoak Primary has been in need of work for some time. Chair of Aberdeenshire’s Education, Learning and Leisure Committee, Isobel Davidson, said: “A new primary school has been a high priority for this council and the education service for many years, and it’s great to see that construction will begin shortly.
“This new school is truly a school fit for the future with excellent design to reduce heating and water costs, to accommodate the growing population in the village of Drumoak and the surrounding area.”
The design for the site is extremely energy efficient and uses sustainable photovoltaic solar panels on the roof and a biomass fuelled boiler to cater for all the heating and hot water requirements.
Access to the primary school will be from the new housing development to the north of the site.
This area is currently under construction by the Stewart Milne but work on the development is expected to be completed within a year.
Plans have also been drawn up for staff and visitor car parking as well as pupil drop-off. This will be located next to the school entrance for ease and safety.
Road widening and pedestrian crossings are already under construction on the main access road from the village to the school.
These developments aim to improve both vehicular and pedestrian access.
The contractor for the Drumoak Primary School project is Robertson Eastern Limited.
It’s hoped the work will take one year to complete.
The predicted completion and handover date is May 2015, when Drumoak pupils should be able to enjoy their new school building, state-of-the-art grounds and sports facilities.
