Emeli’s debut album is one in a million

Alford star Emeli Sandé’s debut album, Our Version Of Events, has now sold over one million copies in the UK, the only album to have done so this year.

The album entered the UK chart at number one on its release in February, has spent a total of five weeks in the top spot and has been in the top ten for 42 consecutive weeks so far, a feat not achieved by a debut album since the release of the Spice Girls’ ‘Spice’ in 1996.

Emeli said of the achievement: “I’ve had such a wonderful year and to round it off by hearing that my album has sold over a million copies is just incredible, it’s the stuff of dreams.

“When you write music you want it to be heard by as many people as possible so it really feels great to reach a milestone like this. I’ve had so many amazing experiences performing my music all over the world now and it all started in Scotland for me.

“Playing at the Aberdeen Music Hall, T in the Park and the Armadillo, carrying the Olympic Torch, singing all over the country during the torch run and meeting kids being helped by Nordoff Robbins are all highlights that I’ll always remember.

“The people at home in Scotland have been behind me from when I started out performing and they’re an incredibly important part of the story of how I got to this point. It means so much to have that support and I’m very grateful.”

Having achieved two number one singles with Professor Green and Labrinth respectively, Emeli has also written tracks on recent albums by Rihanna and Alicia Keys and Jay-Z said of the superstar, “Emeli has a unique sound and she is going to be a big deal”.

Emeli, a former pupil at Alford Academy, performed her next single, ‘Clown’, which is out February, on the final of the X Factor last Sunday.

“It’s about how I felt when I was trying to get signed,” Emeli said. “I was going for all these meetings and people were looking at me like ‘What do we do with you’? It’s about not allowing yourself to be judged by others or to be taken for an idiot. I feel the video reflects that.”

Also released in February will be a DVD of her recent show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

The Brits Critics Choice winner 2012 was recently awarded the ‘Solo Artist of the Year’ at the Q Magazine Awards and dominated the Mobo Awards with three award wins, including Best Album, Best Female Artist and Best R&B/Soul Artist.

Our Version Of Events has gone Gold in Germany and Emeli embarks on a 14-date headline US tour in January before performing across the UK during the spring.
