Everest expedition next up for Kirsty

She’s taught in Guyana, built a school in Nepal, a clinic in Uganda and walked the Great Wall of China for charity, and now a former Banchory Academy pupil will be hassling her friends and family to dig deep once again as she takes on her latest adventure.

Kirsty Meldrum has said she can’t decide if she’s mad or brave as she prepares to trek for 12 days straight to the base camp of the world’s highest mountain.

The 24-year-old is aiming to raise £2000 for the children’s charity CLIC Sargent while taking on the challenge in a group of 26, all of who work for Santander. The banking group has offered to double their employees’ fund-raising efforts meaning if they each reach their target of £2000, it will see £4000 each going towards the children’s cancer charity - donating over £100k in total.

The Santander clan, who are all recent graduates and under the age of 25, will hike until their hearts are content to the base camp between October 6-22 this year.

DETERMINATION

Kirsty said: “It is not going to be easy. The base camp is 5364 metres above sea level which is not just high but sky-high and 3353 times taller than me! This will push my Scottish determination to its limit because there can be no giving up here. Every penny raised is going straight to CLIC Sargent who provide support for children and young people with cancer.”

Santander pick a different charity to raise money for each year and on Tuesday, Kirsty will be visiting the hospital to see the work CLIC Sargent carry out for children and their families affected by cancer.

The finance worker added: “I can’t even imagine what it must feel like for anyone, let alone a child, to find out they have been diagnosed with cancer. It must be terrifying, and yet every single day 10 children in the UK do hear this shocking news.

‘‘CLIC Sargent provide clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to help them cope and get the most out of life. I have been reading about their work on their website and it is both heart-breaking and inspiring to learn how CLIC Sargent help these wee kids through such a challenging & frightening time.”
