A group hoping to provide facilities for sport, young people and special needs in Banchory is to submit an application for lottery funding.
The King George V Community Projects ( KGVCP) has been working for 20 years to develop sport and leisure facilities for Banchory and say they have now reached a point where they have a financially viable business plan.
The cost of the proposed build for the facilities is estimated to be between £2 and £4 million and an application to the Big Lottery will be submitted by late October.
A spokesperson said: “We have learnt over the years that because Banchory is considered affluent, it has the least deprived datazone in the Scottish index of multiple deprivation (SIMD), the town will have great difficulty accessing public funds.”
Having recognised this difficulty the group says the proposed building will need to appeal to a wide range of people and be open 20 hours a day to generate a sustainable income.
The maximum grant from Big Lottery is £1m and for such an award they need to be convinced that the project has full community support,is in line with Local Authority and Sportscotland strategy and that there exists convincing evidence of matched funding.
Parallel applications are being submitted by KGVCP to a number of Trusts and dialogue continues with both officials within Aberdeenshire Council and with local councillors.
Secretary Jean Henretty said: “In the coming weeks we want to ensure that everyone in Banchory is aware of the proposals as we are about to commission a design team and seek planning permission.
Potential funders require a community consultation but also we do not want to miss out any potential users for the facility.
We think we have the correct mix of usable spaces but someone may come up with new ideas.”
She said that anyone over the age of 16 who lives or works in postcode area AB31 can become a full member (of KGVCP), which is free. Anyone else can become an associate member.
