Peterculter shop man passes away

Peterculter born Captain Eric Milne (08/07/44- 10/03/13), who has died at his home in Inverness after a long battle with cancer, experienced a sea-change of career in 1982, when he moved from a senior management post in oil-related shipping to become the first general manager of the town’s £13 million new Eastgate Shopping Centre.

Widely credited with having given impetus to the city’s promotion as a major shopping centre, his quiet, competent style of administration gained him widespread respect and admiration from local business and civic leaders, until his retirement 22 years later at the age of 60.

Later, when asked about how he had adapted to such an apparently great change of circumstance, he would reply: “It’s just like commanding a ship, except that it doesn’t move.”

An only child, Eric was born in Aberdeen, where his father was the local pharmacist in the suburb of Peterculter.

Educated at Peterculter Primary and Secondary Schools, and at Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen, as a schoolboy he competed in international school chess competitions.

His funeral service took place at St Stephen’s Church, Inverness, on Tuesday, March 19, followed by interment at Daviot Church.
