Pie awards are ‘crust’ the ticket for Deeside bakery

A Deeside bakery has risen above the competition and won two top awards at the 15th World Scotch Pie Championships.

Kelly of Cults was given gold for its steak pies and bronze for its sausage rolls.

The ultimate prize and new holder of the title “World Scotch Pie Champion 2014” went to The Kandy Bar of Saltcoats.

The awards ceremony followed the busiest judging day ever with a record entry of 100 butchers and bakers entering some 543 pies, pasties, sausage rolls, bridies, savouries and for the first time Apple Pies into the competition.

Over 200 hopefuls attended the awards luncheon in Dunfermline on January 15.

Jonathon Kelly from Kelly of Cults Ltd said: “We are delighted with our win and can go away with our heads held very high indeed. To have been judged as one of the best in the land against so many of our peers is a huge achievement.”

The competition is supported by Scottish Bakers and the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders.

Alan Clarke of Scottish Bakers, said: “Once again we have brought together the best pies and baked goods in the land and today we can really celebrate the achievement of our hard working butchers and bakers. My heartfelt congratulations go to our winner, and indeed everyone today taking away a prize”

Kelly of Cults was founded 112 years ago and is one of the few remaining independent supermarkets in the North- east.

A family firm- ownership is now in the fourth generation under the Kelly family.
