Tanya’s marathon effort for Motor Neurone Disease

editorial image

When Tanya McDonald ever worries or has second thoughts about what she’s signed herself up for whilst preparing for the Edinburgh Marathon, she pulls herself together and thinks: “I am healthy and in good shape, many afflicted with such debilitating illnesses like MND do not have the opportunity to run, come on Tanya!”.

And that’s why she’s where she is today with her training regime.

The Banchory runner has described her challenge of running the Edinburgh Marathon this year as “something completely different” for her.

Mrs McDonald said she enjoys running, hill walking, cycling and generally keeping fit but was last year “profoundly moved” by the death of her good friend’s father and felt she needed to do something to raise funds to try and find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.

Mrs McDonald said: “I started out thinking that I would do a half marathon and before I knew it, I had ‘clicked’ on the full marathon in Edinburgh 26 May 2013 (mad or what!!)

“The furthest I have run before was 5 miles. Realising what I had committed myself to, in September last year, I started running about 3 miles every other day and 12 miles on a Saturday

“Over the winter I bought myself a treadmill so that I could keep up my training during the worst Banchory winter weather.”

Mrs McDonald is raising funds with a slight twist - she’s holding a competition for people to guess the time she’ll take to complete the marathon when sponsoring her and has gathered some prizes from friends and colleagues for the winner.

Tanya said: “Gavin (my other half) and Ron of McDonald & Ogston Joiners have started the ball rolling with £100 but say’s there’s no timesheet for 8 hours!”
