Thanks for the lift!

AS reported in last week's Piper a new transport scheme has been launched in Banchory for those people who have difficulty getting to appointments or to the shops.

Run by WRVS Aberdeenshire Community Services, the scheme got underway on December 11, with Alastair Mather of Finzean its very first customer.

Alastair has been learning to play mandolin for about a year and needed to get to Aboyne, to attend a lesson with well-known local musician, Andy Linklater. Unable to drive himself on this occasion, he was taken there and back by local volunteer driver, Anneke Mayo.

He said: "It's a great service and I would certainly use it again if I had to," adding, "I hope to return to driving again soon and, when I do, I'll be offering my services to drive people locally."

Project Office Manager, Cathy Torrance, would also like to hear from new volunteer drivers in the Banchory area. She said: "We would encourage anyone who is interested in becoming involved with this project to contact the WRVS office for more information. Volunteering a few hours of your time each month may be all that is needed to make a huge difference to someone else's life."

WRVS Aberdeenshire Community Services Project's office is based in Inverurie and all enquiries should be directed there. The telephone number is 01467 626012 (Mon-Fri 9am-2pm). The office will be closed for the Christmas period, from December 21, for two weeks.
