A Deeside bride-to-be has told how she was left “speechless” after her partner carved a wedding proposal into a tree.
Rebecca Cannon, 23, thought she and boyfriend Lee Meldrum, 27, were heading for a typical stroll at Scolty Hill but instead she was given the surprise of her life.
Rebecca said: “We were on a nice, but cold walk at Scolty when Lee suddenly stopped and said he saw a baby deer fall in the woods, so I walked into the woods to see if it was okay.
“Lee said, “stop, look behind you” and there carved into the tree were the words: “Marry Me Rebecca”.
“As my jaw dropped , Lee got down on one knee with a very beautiful diamond and asked me to marry him. I was absolutely speechless.”
Lee, an offshore worker, had spent the previous day carving the message and admits the whole process was nerve-wracking.
He said: “I bought the ring online and was anxiously waiting for it to be delivered but it kept being delayed.
“Eventually, my mum called and told me it had arrived – and that was when the panic started to set in.
“I spent an afternoon carving the message and was given some curious looks by people walking past. The next day I persuaded Rebecca to go for a walk while we were driving past Scolty but that proved quite tricky as she complained that she didn’t have the right footwear.
“I was doing my best to remain composed as we approached tree and thankfully when we got there, Rebecca said yes. I was over the moon!”
The couple, who both attended Banchory Academy, have been together for seven years and went to Scolty on their first date.
Lee says he first got the idea of carving the proposal when he recalled his grandfather doing something similar when he was younger.
“When I was young, my grandfather carved our names into a tree and I suppose it has just stuck with me,” he said. “Rebecca and I still regularly go for walks at Scolty so it seemed like a fitting place.”
The couple, who have a one year-old daughter Safiyah, are hoping to get married in Italy in August 2014.
