Westhill student Saskia to tackle Mount Kilimanjaro
A journalism student from Robert Gordon University (RGU) is part of a group of 27 who have been recognised for their charitable efforts after raising more than £30,000 for a leading international children’s charity.
This summer, Saskia Leighton will be part of a team of 27 students who will take part in a Challenge Event to scale Africa’s tallest mountain to raise money for a Childreach International project, which provides education and health care for children in Tanzania.
The students will undertake a five-day trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and, along the way, visit a sustainable grass roots project which they have helped fund.
The group has already raised more than £30,000 through individual fund-raising efforts and they aim to reach a combined total of £67,000 before they fly to the Southern Hemisphere.
The 21-year-old has been fundraising since last October and is fast-approaching her personal target of £2450.
EVENTS
She said: “Fundraising for the trip has been a lot of fun and we’ve each organised a number of successful events.
‘‘From a sponsored swim in the North Sea to speed dating nights at RGU:Union, we’ve tried to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic charity.
“We can’t wait to travel to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and see the positive impact the education and healthcare project we are fund-raising for is having on the local community.”
RGU’s principal, Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, and the CEO of Childreach International, Firoz Patel, have come together to acknowledge the students’ hard work.
The principal added: “We are tremendously proud of the hard work our students have put in to raise money for Childreach International and are pleased to recognise their efforts.
“RGU students have a long history of supporting good causes around the world and to have raised so much money for children’s project is a fantastic achievement.
‘‘I wish the students every success during their trip to Tanzania and am sure their hard work and determination will help them every step of the way to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.”
