MP Sir Robert Smith has welcomed an agreement from mobile networks EE, O2, Three and Vodaphone to tackle mobile ‘not spot’ areas.
‘Not spots’, or areas which have coverage from some but not all of the four mobile networks, are set to be improved under the agreement secured by the Coalition government.
The four networks have committed to investing in a programme to improve mobile infrastructure and coverage which will help to eliminate the total number of ‘not spots’ in the UK by two-thirds.
Sir Robert said: “It is good news that the Coalition government has secured this agreement to improve mobile phone coverage and invest in infrastructure.
“This will help to improve services in the North East and I hope that families and businesses will benefit from a more reliable service as a result.
“Mobile networks have committed to guaranteeing voice and text coverage to 90% of the UK by 2017.
“The geography of the North East can be challenging and it is positive that the networks have committed to extending their reach.”
