Scenes to be shot in Deeside

Doctor Who’s Matt Smith is set to star in Netflix’s first UK production in the North-East, some of which will be filmed in Deeside at Balmoral Castle.

The 11th man to play Doctor Who will play a young Prince Philip, in a ten-part drama called The Crown.

The Crown is being produced by Left Bank Pictures, in association with Sony for the global streaming giant.

It is written by Peter Morgan, and tells the story over two of the most famous locations in the world - Buckingham Palace and number ten, Downing Street.

It is based on a play called The Audience, by the same writer, which was critically acclaimed and starred Dame Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II.

In The Crown, Wolf Hall actress Claire Foy Foy will take on the 25-year-old monarch, and John Lithgow is slated to play Winston Churchill.

Each season of The Crown will cover a decade of the Queen’s reign.

The show will chart Queen Elizabeth II’s reign from when she heard her father, George VII, had died, while on a tour in Kenya.

Netflix are reported to be spending around $100 million on the project, and so marking another large budget project on Matt Smith’s CV, alongside Terminator Genisys, Lost River, the upcoming Patient Zero, and of course, Doctor Who, for which he was nominated for a Bafta.

Filming is expected to start later this month.
