Third time’s a charm: Banchory’s childhood sweethearts tie the knot

A “disaster” of a first kiss between local teenagers blossomed into a beautiful love story as two childhood sweethearts tied the knot last week.

Megan Douglas, formerly of Darnford Cottage, Durris, and Craig Meldrum, formerly of Beech Tree Road, Banchory, surprised friends and family when they married in a secret ceremony in Stonehaven last week.

Craig says I was always the one who got away but he finally got me back and this time it was forever.

Speaking of their on-off romance, Megan said: “Craig and I met at Banchory Academy in our first year of school and we were in the same registration class.

“He was my first kiss when I was 13 and it was a total disaster.

‘‘We were together on and off for about a year until he finally dumped me for my best friend, also aged 13, but I decided to forgive him and we remained friends throughout school.”

The Deeside duo decided to give it another go in 2009, but, when Megan was offered a place to study at university in Paris, she and Craig once again went their separate ways.

After graduating from Robert Gordon University in 2012 and spending a year travelling across Australia, Craig got back in touch in 2014.

Megan said: “As soon as we had our first date we knew that this time it was for real.

“My mum was going through the loft recently and found a note from my first year diary saying how I couldn’t wait to take part in the swimming gala because I was excited to see Craig in his trunks!”

The groom sealed the deal with a romantic proposal on the beach at Stonehaven.

“He had written ‘Marry Me’ in bamboo sticks on the sand and lit it on fire,’’ Megan explained.

‘‘He then set off fireworks and we popped open some wine.

‘‘Craig has a son, Finn, who is now four. He was there the night that Craig proposed but was only interested in the fireworks!”

The couple finally tied the knot in private on March 26.

“For us it was more important to be married than to have a wedding so we chose to do it in private.

‘‘It was quite a shock to our family and friends but they have all been absolutely lovely and seem to be as happy as we are.
