A big-hearted eight-year-old Crathes Primary School pupil has received volunteering awards after raising an amazing £525 for Children in Need.

Tom Horrell, in primary 4, completed a coast-to-coast bike ride with his father, Perran, in the October holidays.

They decided to tackle the 108-mile route along Hadrian’s Wall. The ride took three days to complete.

Crathes Primary is embarking on a project this year to encourage youngsters to volunteer in their community in whichever way they can.

The project is based on the Young Aberdeenshire Volunteer Award for ages 5-15.

Tom’s mammoth effort has earned him both bronze and silver awards, of which both he and the school are enormously proud. The awards are granted by Volunteer Centre Aberdeenshire.

Tom said: “I wanted to do a coast to coast bike ride, and chose Hadrian’s Wall because the Romans are cool. I chose to raise money for Children in Need because Pudsey Bear is awesome.

“The bike ride was very hilly - and I learnt how to cycle with no hands on the last day!”
