MP Stuart Donaldson: On the Deeside Way

Stuart Donaldson is calling on the government to complete the Deeside Way, amidst concerns that its incomplete state could be harming tourism.

The SNP MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine this week signed an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons which congratulates Sustrans on the 20 year anniversary of the National Cycle Network.

Mr Donaldson said: “I am more than happy to support the motion which congratulates Sustrans on the 20 year anniversary of the National Cycle Network.

“In our constituency we have many fantastic walking and cycling routes. However, the jewel in the crown of Royal Deeside should be the Deeside Way.

“I have had many constituents raise the issue over the completion of the Deeside Way with me, folks who want to use the path for commuting as well as for leisure. I’ve also spoken to many business owners who have expressed to me their concerns that the Way is incomplete, which is having a knock on impact on tourism.”

The Network runs for over 14,000 miles across the UK, linking up villages. It is estimated that the Network has saved the UK economy more than £7 billion since it was established 20 years ago by improving people’s health and reducing congestion, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. It is also estimated that the Network has saved the NHS £22 million from reducing obesity in the last year. The Scottish Government has committed to increase spending on walking and cycling this year.

Speaking today Stuart said: “I have today written to Sustrans, The Scottish Government and Aberdeenshire Council to ascertain the current situation with the path and to ask what steps can be taken in order to compete it.”
