The first two hard-working young carers to be recognised by a new award scheme in Aberdeen were named at a ceremony on December 15.
Bryony Morkel, of Banchory and Alex Milne, of Bucksburn, were the worthy recipients.
Bryony was picked up in a Jaguar limousine from Banchory Academy as she travelled to the VSA offices in Aberdeen.
Sponsored by funeral directors Wm Gilchrist, the award of a £100 voucher and a certificate will be given as part of ‘Simply Thank You’ which recognises and rewards all that young carers do in looking after family members.
Former Lord Provost of Aberdeen John Reynolds will select a winning young carer each quarter.
It is hoped that ‘Simply Thank You’ will encourage other young carers to reach out for help by contacting VSA Young Carer Services, who are supporting Wm Gilchrist in running the scheme.
Bobby Gunn, community relations officer and funeral director at Wm Gilchrist, said: “The statistics suggest that there are around 2,300 young carers in Aberdeen although the belief is that there is actually double that number.
“Many of them are trained from a very young age to help around the house and I hope that through ‘Simply Thank You’ we can reach other young carers who do not currently receive any support from organisations such as VSA.
“It’s a privilege for us to be involved in this and to be able to recognise the young carers for all their hard work.”
Mary Drever, VSA’s Project Manager for Young Carers, said: “We are delighted to be involved in this initiative, it is a very generous offer by Wm Gilchrist and will assist the recognition of young carers in our city.
“Young carers can have a very difficult time caring for one or more members of their family and our role is to give them every possible support in doing this.
“The VSA Chill Out Zone is a particular favourite with our young carers as are our trips away which allow them to experience new adventures.”
Application forms to nominate a young carer are available from VSA at 38 Castle Street and from Wm Gilchrist, Bennachie House, 44-46 Rose Street.
