Deeside U16s 29 : Caithness U16s 7
DEESIDE U16s took to the field on a gloriously sunny day at Tillybrake, Banchory and it looked as if they would need all the reserves they had as the Caithness pack presented a formidable obstacle.
With the game barely a minute old George Moody intercepted a Caithness pass inside his own half and then sprinted to the other end of the pitch before being tackled 5 metres out.
His pass inside to Daniel Thomson looked destined for the first try but a knock-on by the Deeside hooker as he was tackled meant the chance was gone.
Deeside continued to press for the opening score with Charlie Grimble and Will Low both carrying well in the forwards whilst scrum half Glen Taylor was directing operations in the backs.
The first try did eventually come for Deeside on 15 minutes as William Tubby received the ball just inside the Caithness 22 before stepping inside two men and then outpacing the Caithness defence to go in for the try under the posts. William converted easily to have Deeside 7-0 ahead.
Caithness began to play to the strength in their pack with good yards being gained by the big number 8. Deeside showed great resilience in defence through Callum Ferguson and Rhuaridh McKenzie with both players putting in good tackles. Rob Hessel was another who was putting in some big hits.
Caithness had a giant of a winger playing on the right but as he collected the ball and made for the Deeside line on halfway Nick Harper bravely put in the tackle that stopped him in his tracks.
Daniel Thomson managed to catch the ball cleanly from the resulting lineout and another Deeside attack was launched as Cameron Knott burst through two tackles before going to ground.
Deeside were punished for possibly showing too much ambition as William Tubby's floated pass to his winger was intercepted by the big no.14 from Caithness who ran it in under the posts to have his team level after the conversion at 7-7.
Deeside did manage to get their noses back in front before half-time as William Tubby kicked a penalty in front of the posts for a 10-7 lead.
The second half saw Deeside ring the changes with new personnel as well as positional changes. Callum Gordon moved inside to stand-off as William Tubby took a break and showed just how effective that blistering pace can be from no.10 as he jinked his way past two or three defenders to score under the posts. He took on the kicking duties too and converted to have Deeside 17-7 ahead.
Deeside sub Ewan Black then made a great run from the halfway line dragging defenders with him as he went. He was eventually brought to ground inside the Caithness 22 but scrum half Glen Taylor gleefully accepted a pop pass from Ewan before streaking away from the Caithness rearguard and under the posts for a good try. Callum Gordon failed to convert but Deeside were now 22-7 up.
Caithness continued to press for another try. Solid defence from Josh McKenzie gave his team confidence and sub Jack Duncan got in on the act with a bone crunching tackle of his own before he picked up the ball and carried well through the Caithness defence.
The Caithness team seemed to be getting frustrated as the game wore on but this simply played into Deeside's hands.
Deeside launched yet another attack which resulted in the ball being fed out to flanker Fraser "Kiwi" Harle who burst through the Caithness defence to score another well worked try for the home team.
William Tubby converted to put his team 29-7 ahead. There were a few more skirmishes towards both lines before the end but the whistle was eventually blown to bring this highly entertaining, and extremely competitive match to an end.
Deeside travel to Inverness next week to face another test in the form of Highland.
