ONE of the oldest cricket clubs in Scotland is currently appealing for new members.

Some people may not realise that Banchory Cricket Club was actually established in 1854 when the Deeside railway arrived in Banchory along with a healthy boost to the local population.

The first recorded match took place in 1858 against Victoria CC and another early game against Auchenblae involved travelling over the Cairn O'Mount by cart.

By the 1870s the cricket bug had spread with the club expanding to cater for four teams in Banchory. During this period the club only played local friendlies against nearby teams from places such as Echt and Potarch, and were based at a ground called the Market Stance, near to where the Banchory Car Centre is now located.

In 1889 Banchory played their first fixture at the newly created Burnett Park but in 1906 the club mysteriously folded and didn't reform until 1924. From then until 1939 the club played in the competitive Deeside League against Aboyne, Ballater and Alford.

During the Second World War the Burnett Park was dug up as part of the 'Grow More Food' campaign and the club had to wait until 1956 when local man Harold Davidson rekindled the local interest in cricket and entered the team in the Aberdeenshire Grades Association where Banchory Cricket Club has played ever since, reaching the dizzy heights of the top league in 1981. A 2nd XI was formed in 1979 and a junior section in 1983.

Tim Wilkinson has written two histories of the club - in 1987 and updated in 2004 to coincide with Bancory CC's 150th anniversary.
The club currently has two teams in the Aberdeen Cricket Association and three junior teams. Anyone interested in joining the club, with or without previous experience, can contact Debbie Dickenson on (013398) 82015.
