ORIENTEERING in Aberdeenshire's forests will get another boost this year when Forestry Commission Scotland kicks off a new monthly series of beginners events.
The introductory sessions are open to individuals and families that are interested in giving orienteering a try. The first is on Saturday, March 22.

Recreation Forester, Mark Reeve, said: "Our forests are regularly used by orienteering enthusiasts
and the fantastic facilities in Bennachie forest make it one of the most popular locations."

"The sport is an excellent way to combine a visit to the forest with some exercise and adventure and our series of one-day events aims to encourage more people to come along and try it out."

"Beginners and novices of all ages can get together to learn a little more about the sport in a relaxed, fun environment with others of the same experience level."

"There will be trained coaches at each of the events who will provide basic instruction as well as coaching on techniques, route planning and navigation."

"Orienteering is all about fun. You don't have to be the fastest or the first to finish so it's great for all levels of fitness. It's also a great way to introduce younger people to outdoor recreation. Just make sure you have appropriate clothing and footwear – and some snacks!"

"We've had great success with these events in the past and I'm sure that we're going to get lots of people hooked on this challenging and rewarding activity."

The free events will be held between 11.00am and 1.30pm on the following dates;
Saturday 22 March
Saturday 26 April
Saturday 17 May (including a doggie orienteering event where you can try juggling a map and your dog, without getting lost on the way!)
Saturday 28 June

Booking in advance is not required and anyone taking part should meet at the Bennachie Centre, near to Chapel of Garioch.

Contact Mark Reeve on 01466 794161 or mark.reeve@forestry.gsi.gov.uk for more information.
Dates for later in the year are posted on Forestry Commission Scotland's website (www.forestry.gov.uk/scotland)
