A SPORTY teenager has scooped the second year girls' sports trophy from Banchory Academy - 28 years after her mother won the same prize.

Catherine Thomson, 13, of Corsee Road, received the award in recognition of not only her success at the recent sports day but also her all-round sporting ability. She was also awarded the first year girls' sports trophy last year.

Proud mum Emma, said she had also won the trophy in both her first and second years at Banchory Academy and the trophy bears her maiden name - Emma Herries.

Twenty-eight-years on from her sporting success, Emma has also just discovered that she still holds the school's junior girls long-jump record at 4.5m, achieved in 1981.

"I won the trophy in 1980 and 1981 I think," said Emma. "Catherine has been awarded this basically for her success on sports day in athletics events like the 100m, 200m, 800m and long jump, but there is also a recognition of her contribution throughout the year in terms of PE.

"She is quite a sporty person and is a member of the tennis club. She used to play for the Deeside Girls football team too. She is very active and into her sports.

"We are very proud of her. Last year when she won it for the first year girls, we had no inkling that she was going to get it. She is an all-round sporty girl but we had no idea she was one of the front runners. I told her this year 'don't expect to win it again, just do your best' but she was determined to win it again!

"Apparently I still hold the school long jump record, which I find hard to believe!"

Catherine's siblings are also sport-mad. Elder brother Daniel, 15, is a member of the Deeside Rugby Football Club and also plays tennis; and younger brother George, nine, recently competed in an inter-schools cross-country competition. All three youngsters recently ran the Balmoral races, taking part in the 5k, 2.5k and 1.5k respectively.

Catherine will officially receive her award at the annual prizegiving tomorrow (Thursday).
