A group of 27 pupils set off at 6:30am for the long trip to the Scottish Schools Orienteering Championship 2012 at Moor Country Park, Lanark last week.

Keen to maintain the school’s record of success and hopeful of being invited to the selection races for Team Scotland places at next year’s World Schools Orienteering Championship, the team didn’t let the nonstop rain dampen their competitive spirit.

Everyone on the team completed their course without miss punching, including the S1 and S2 novices, which was key to Aboyne winning the Overall Champion School Trophy outright.

A special mention goes to Joshua Dudley who secured the S5/6 Boys Individual Gold despite having attended the Senior Ball and after party the night before and then walking from Coull to Aboyne in order to compete. The S2 Girls also won Team Silver at their first major event.

Aboyne’s many other medal winners were:

Individual - S2 boys Silver – Ross McMurtrie, S4 Boys Bronze –AJ Fyfe, S4 Girls Gold – Bronwyn Matthews, S5/6 Boys Gold – Josh Dudley

Team winners - S2 Boys Gold – Ross McMurtrie, Robbie Iason, Dugal Copper; S2 Girls Silver – Lyn Hardman, Jenny Glass, Sarah-Jane Esson; S3 Boys Gold – Iain Johnson, Iain Campbell, Daniel Dunn; S4 Boys Gold – AJ Fyfe, Alistair Walker, Oliver Ford-Bryant; S4 Girls Gold – Bronwyn Matthews, Jessica Stuart, Cara McMurtrie.
