Banchory pick up vital league win

Banchory entertained fellow strugglers MS United, with the teams sitting at the bottom of the league.

It was MS United who started the game strongest, and the play was mainly in the Banchory half.

However as soon as Banchory made some minor changes they began to dominate the play and created a number of chances for Chalmers and Meldrum.

With 25 minutes gone Banchory took the lead, some good play down the right allowed Meldrum to fire off a shot, which was initially saved by the keeper, but Meldrum followed up the rebound to fire the ball into the net.

This gave Banchory some much needed confidence as they began to create some good openings, and it was not long before the pressure paid off when Chalmers was fouled 20 yards out.

Scott Rooney stepped up to unleash an unstoppable free kick into the left hand corner to double the lead.

Banchory should have went 3-0 up when Meldrum’s cross was met by Chalmers but his header went inches over the bar.

A break down the left and some good play by Juan found John Smith whose floating cross deceived the keeper and nestled into the corner of the net.

Just on half time Banchory got a fourth when a corner by Chalmers was met unchallenged by MacGregor who bundled the ball into the net to give Banchory a commanding 4-0 half time lead.

Banchory started the second half well and an early chance fell to Rooney, when Chalmers broke free down the right and his cross was met on the half volley by Rooney but the keeper pulled of a fine save.

MS Utd changed formation and started to cause Banchory some problems.

United’s number 10 ran through when he looked in an offside position but the referee played on as the away side pulled a goal back.

Banchory however should have scored again, when good work by Rooney gave Chalmers a great chance from 12 yards but he went for power and the ball sailed over the bar.

On the 75 minute mark Banchory failed to clear their lines and a cross from the left was met by the unmarked MS Utd striker to reduce the deficit to two.

Lawrence and Mackie were brought on to freshen up the team and Banchory saw out the remainder of the game.

It was a well deserved victory, and of vital importance for Banchory who still finds themselves in the bottom two, although now it is MS Utd who sit bottom by a point.
