Banchory Academy was the venue for the second annual Deeside Primary Schools Badminton competition.

Pupils from four local primary schools, Banchory, Drumoak, Kincardine O’Neil and Lumphanan competed for the Drumoak Shield with an excellent display of badminton skills.

The Drumoak Shield was donated by the family of Brian James Chalmers in his memory to continue his badminton legacy as an ambassador for junior badminton in the area. Both singles and doubles events were played.

The singles initially was ‘pool’ based and Aaron Watkins (Lumphanan), Sam Martin (Banchory), Duncan Cameron (Banchory) and Richie Issac (Lumphanan) all played well to move into the boys semi-finals. At this stage, Aaron played Sam and Duncan met Richie. Both semi-finals provided much excitement for the spectators with some long rallies. Aaron using some super drop shots pulled off the win 21-10 to gain his place in the final where he met Richie. Richie & Duncan had a very close semi-final where both played some lovely clears and smashes, Richie eventually won 21-16. In the final, Aaron was too strong both in execution of shot and agility and ran out champion by 21-6.

The girls who won through to the semi-finals were Ellie Rodger (Banchory), Beth Morrison (Lumphanan), Trudi Anderson (Lumphanan) and Harriet Law (Banchory). Ellie beat Beth 21-14 but the other semi was a closer match with long rallies and Harriet eventually won over Trudi 21-20. In the final, Harriet beat Ellie and was crowned champion.

In the doubles semi-finals, Louis Easton/Greg McRae (Drumoak) beat Ellie Rodger/Harriet Law (Banchory) and Sam Martin/Duncan Cameron (Banchory) beat Beth Morrison/Trudi Anderson (Lumphanan). In the final, all 4 boys played to the best of their ability and kept the spectators on the edge of their seats with some lovely badminton. The Banchory boys held their nerve however and the pair crept through by 21-16.

Overall, Banchory won the team event and were presented with the Brian Chalmers Memorial Shield.

All other winners received trophies and 2 further trophies were presented to the youngest players in the competition, namely Kincardine O’Neil P4 players Liam Harker & Ali Ware.
