Over the weekend of July 20th/21st Crathes Croquet Club hosted the first National croquet tournament to be held in the North East of Scotland. Sponsored by the Scottish Croquet Association (SCA) the event attracted entrants from the top Edinburgh croquet clubs and from the English Lake District and Somerset, including four Scottish international players.
The winners of the Doubles tournament were Tom Ryan and Ian Hall from Keswick Croquet Club and the singles event was convincingly won by Bob Burnett (former Scottish National champion), now living in Somerset.
Brian Clark of Crathes croquet Club and SCA representative said “ this innovative event has been a great success. There was fierce competition but matches were played in the best sporting spirit. As a new club we have learned a great deal from the top players who participated and hope that by next year we can mount a real challenge”.
Brian concluded “ there will be a bigger and better tournament next year. All those who came are planning to return not least because of the hospitality they received and the pleasure of playing on the magnificent lawn at Crathes Castle. Crathes Croquet Club members are determined to show that croquet is now firmly on the map in the North east of Scotland, and as skills improve, show that they can compete with the best in the Central Belt of Scotland!”
